The Villa Mohotti Walauwa - Bentota

Location: Set in lush coconut grove gardens bordering the beach, 'The Villa' dates back to 1880. The Dutch period manor house was originally used as part of a coconut estate. However, renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa carried out extensive refurbishments, and has made it into one of the most desirable hotels on the south coast. It is only metres from Galle Road yet feels a lifetime away- luxurious yet homely.

Accommodation: The 14 large rooms are superbly designed. Simple, pared-down luxury is the overriding theme. Ours was floor to ceiling white, with only colonial planter's furniture in between. High vaulted ceilings are wonderfully criss-crossed with exposed beams, which give the otherwise very safe and sturdy rooms an almost hut-like ambience.

Most of the superior rooms have balconies, as do all the suites which are larger and have better views. Family rooms with adjoining doors are also available.

Facilities: The food is one of the highlights of staying at The Villa Mohotti Walauwa - along with the excellent architecture and design.

The dining area is outside and lit by candles and lanterns in the evening. Breakfasts range from Sri Lankan to Western, as do lunches and dinners. The menus include mulligatawny soup, chowder, salads, noodles and lobster. You can eat in the open-air dining room or take your meals on the porch.
