Location: Kalu's Hideaway, a modern luxury eco friendly jungle retreat is set amidst a rural and remote dry zone village, just 15 minutes away from the gates of the Uda Walawe National Park. Nestled in five acres of beautifully manicured garden surrounded by abundant shrubs and forest, neighboring the breathtaking Udawalawe reserviour is the private property owned by former Sri Lanka wicket keeper batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana. It is a wonderful place to come back to after a jungle safari. Birds, butterflies, and insects abound, making it ideal for nature lovers.
Accommodation:Kalu's has five spacious ensuite bedrooms - three doubles and one triple on the ground floor and one double on the upper floor. The rooms are furnished with solid timber single beds, comfortable with crisp white linen. Ceiling fans and natural breezes compensate for the absence of a/c. The upper-floor double room, which is reached through a rustic staircase, has great views of the surrounding landscape and a private covered balcony. The water supply is taken from garden wells.
Facilities:Kalu's has ample garden space for children, including a play area with a swing. The front lawn has seating, ideal to sit out under a star filled sky. Bedrooms on the ground floor open onto a small lounge with a lower sitting area that has built-in seating, TV with satellite channels and home theatre system. An open-sided, covered terrace area at the back houses the dining room which overlooks the vegetable gardens and the wilderness beyond. As well as Sri Lankan and Western dishes, BBQs are organized on request in a garden pavilion. Travellers often drop by here for lunch on their way from the Uda Walawe Park. Kalu's Hideaway is staffed with a helpful resident manager, a cook, house boy and gardener.
